THE AGENCY

Barcelona Regional is a public agency for strategic planning, urban development and infrastructures that was established in 1993 on the basis of the experience gained during the city of Barcelona’s urban transformation for the 1992 Olympic Games.

Led by Barcelona City Council and with the participation of other public shareholders, including Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), Port of Barcelona and the Barcelona Zona Franca Consortium, it was established as the Metropolitan Agency for Urban and Infrastructure Development.

Since then, and with the momentum provided by Josep Acebillo and its various presidents, its major projects have covered the metropolitan scale and important works to transform the city. Infrastructure, urban development and the environment have all played their part in making a specific practice a recognised hallmark.

From the environmental recovery of the Besòs River to the transformation and urban development of the area that hosted the Forum of Cultures in 2004, the Poblenou Infrastructure Plan and the next generation 22@ neighbourhood and the planning of the area around the high-speed railway in the La Sagrera and Sants districts, among others, a unique way of understanding complex urban phenomena has taken shape on many occasions.

These major projects have been approached from an increasingly interdisciplinary perspective, seeking to address the progressive complexity of urban issues without moving away from specific problems, and with the aim of creating operational approaches guaranteed by a large and prestigious multidisciplinary team from the fields of architecture, urban planning, engineering, geography, economics and biology.
